The Early Years

Princess Alice was born into a life of privilege and royalty. The daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. Her childhood was spent in the idyllic surroundings of Windsor Castle and the Isle of Wight, where she developed a deep love for nature and the outdoors.

A Royal Wedding

In 1903, Alice married Prince Andrew of Greece. The couple had five children together, including the future Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Alice embraced her new role as a princess with enthusiasm, dedicating herself to charitable work and supporting her husband's military career.

The Outbreak of War

The outbreak of World War I in 1914 brought a new set of challenges to Alice's life. She volunteered as a nurse, tending to wounded soldiers on the front lines. Her compassion and dedication earned her the admiration of both the troops and the medical staff.

The Greek-Turkish War

In 1919, Greece entered into a war with Turkey. Alice once again played an active role in the conflict, establishing a hospital in Athens to care for the wounded. She tirelessly worked to provide medical care and comfort to those in need, regardless of their nationality or religion.

The Exile

In 1922, the Greek monarchy was overthrown and Alice and her family were forced into exile. They spent the next several years living in various European countries, including France, Italy, and England. Despite the challenges of exile, Alice remained steadfast in her faith and continued to support her family.

The Return to Greece

In 1936, the monarchy was restored in Greece and Alice and her family returned to their homeland. Alice resumed her charitable work, establishing schools, hospitals, and orphanages. She also became involved in the Greek Orthodox Church, becoming a devout and influential member.

World War II and the Nazi Occupation

With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Greece once again became a battleground. During the Nazi occupation, Alice courageously hid Jewish families in her home, risking her own life to protect them from the horrors of the Holocaust. Her actions earned her the recognition of Yad Vashem as a "Righteous Among the Nations."

Later Years and Legacy

After the war, Alice continued to devote herself to charitable work. She established a nursing home for the elderly and a leper colony on the Greek island of Spinalonga. In her later years, she became a mentor to young people, encouraging them to live lives of faith and compassion.

Princess Alice died in 1969 at the age of 84. She was widely mourned in Greece and around the world. Her legacy of faith, compassion, and service continues to inspire people to this day.
