Max Immelmann was one of the most celebrated fighter pilots of World War I. He was a German ace who scored 17 confirmed aerial victories and became a national hero in his homeland. Immelmann was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1890. He joined the German Army in 1914 and was assigned to the aviation service. This feat earned him the nickname "The Eagle of Lille" and made him a national hero in Germany. Immelmann continued to score aerial victories throughout the war, and he eventually became one of the most successful fighter pilots of all time.

Immelmann was killed in combat on June 18, 1918, when his plane was shot down by British anti-aircraft fire. He was 28 years old. Immelmann's death was a major blow to the German war effort, and he was mourned by his countrymen as a national hero.
