Early Life and Education

Nellie McClung was born in Chatsworth, Ontario, in 1873. She was the daughter of Scottish immigrants, and her family was poor. McClung attended public school in Chatsworth, and she later went on to study at the University of Manitoba.

Career

McClung began her career as a teacher, but she soon became involved in the women's rights movement. In 1911, she was elected to the Manitoba legislature, becoming the first woman to serve in a provincial legislature in Canada.
