In Proud: My Fight for an Unlikely American Dream, Mexican immigrant Jose Antonio Vargas tells the story of his journey to becoming an American citizen. Vargas was brought to the United States illegally when he was 12 years old. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended college at Santa Clara University. After graduating, Vargas worked as a journalist for the Washington Post and the New York Times Magazine.
In 2011, Vargas came out as an undocumented immigrant in an essay for the New York Times Magazine. The essay went viral, and Vargas became a national figure. He has since become an advocate for undocumented immigrants, and has spoken out against the anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration.
