Monica Seles is a former professional tennis player who won nine Grand Slam singles titles and was ranked number one in the world for a total of 178 weeks. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009.

Seles was born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia) in 1973. She began playing tennis at the age of six and quickly rose through the ranks of junior tennis. In 1989, at the age of 16, she won the French Open and became the youngest player to ever win a Grand Slam singles title.

Seles went on to win eight more Grand Slam singles titles, including the Australian Open (1991, 1992, 1993),the French Open (1990, 1991, 1992),Wimbledon (1992),and the US Open (1991, 1992). She was also a member of the Yugoslav team that won the Fed Cup in 1991.

Seles' career was cut short in 1993 when she was stabbed by a deranged fan. She returned to tennis in 1995, but she was never able to regain her previous form. She retired from professional tennis in 2008.
