Lincoln's Early Life

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents, Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, were poor farmers. Lincoln had two older sisters, Sarah and Nancy, and a younger brother, Thomas. The family moved to Indiana when Lincoln was seven years old. Lincoln's father died when he was nine years old, and his mother died when he was ten years old. Lincoln was raised by his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln.

Lincoln was a self-educated man. He read everything he could get his hands on, including the Bible, Shakespeare, and history books. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1836. Lincoln moved to Illinois in 1834, and he soon became involved in politics. He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1834, and he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849.

Lincoln's Assassination

Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Booth was a Confederate sympathizer, and he was angry that Lincoln had won the Civil War. Booth shot Lincoln in the head, and Lincoln died the following day. Booth was captured and killed by Union soldiers 12 days later.
