Mythological Heroines

The first section of the book tells the stories of some of the most well-known and beloved mythological heroines of India. These women include:

  • Durga: The goddess of war and protection, Durga is one of the most powerful and revered deities in the Hindu pantheon.
  • Kali: The goddess of destruction and time, Kali is a fierce and fearsome deity who is often depicted as a black-skinned woman with a garland of skulls around her neck.
  • Lakshmi: The goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi is one of the most popular and well-loved deities in India. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman with a lotus flower in her hand.
  • Parvati: The goddess of love and marriage, Parvati is the wife of the god Shiva. She is a gentle and loving goddess who is often depicted as a beautiful woman with a fair complexion and long, flowing hair.
  • Sita: The wife of the god Rama, Sita is a model of purity and devotion. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman with a gentle and loving demeanor.

Historical Heroines

The second section of the book tells the stories of some of the most influential historical heroines of India. These women include:

  • Rani Lakshmibai: A queen who fought against the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Rani Lakshmibai is considered one of the greatest heroines of India.
  • Sarojini Naidu: A poet and political activist, Sarojini Naidu was one of the leaders of the Indian independence movement. She was the first woman to be elected president of the Indian National Congress.
  • Indira Gandhi: The first female prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi was a powerful and controversial leader who ruled India for over two decades.
  • Mother Teresa: A Catholic nun who dedicated her life to serving the poor and sick, Mother Teresa is one of the most well-known and respected humanitarians of all time.
  • Kalpana Chawla: The first Indian woman to travel to space, Kalpana Chawla was a NASA astronaut who died in the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster in 2003.

Literary Heroines

The third section of the book tells the stories of some of the most popular and influential literary heroines of India. These women include:

  • Shakuntala: The heroine of the play Shakuntala by Kalidasa, Shakuntala is a beautiful and virtuous young woman who is loved by the king Dushyanta.
  • Draupadi: The heroine of the epic poem Mahabharata, Draupadi is the wife of the five Pandava brothers. She is a strong and independent woman who fights for her rights.
  • Sita: The heroine of the epic poem Ramayana, Sita is the wife of the god Rama. She is a beautiful and virtuous woman who is kidnapped by the demon king Ravana.
  • Chitralekha: The heroine of the novel Chitralekha by Mulk Raj Anand, Chitralekha is a young woman who fights for her right to marry the man she loves.
  • Phoolan Devi: The heroine of the novel Phoolan Devi: The Bandit Queen by Mala Sen, Phoolan Devi is a young woman who becomes a bandit after being sold into marriage and gang-raped.

Contemporary Heroines

The fourth section of the book tells the stories of some of the most inspiring contemporary heroines of India. These women include:

  • Irom Sharmila: An activist who has been fasting for over two decades to protest the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Irom Sharmila is one of the most well-known human rights activists in India.
  • Teesta Setalvad: A lawyer and activist who works to protect the rights of religious minorities in India, Teesta Setalvad is a fearless advocate for justice.
  • Aruna Roy: A social activist who works to promote transparency and accountability in government, Aruna Roy is a co-founder of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS),a non-profit organization that works to empower marginalized communities in India.
  • Medha Patkar: A social activist who works to protect the rights of farmers and adivasis (indigenous people),Medha Patkar is a co-founder of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA),a non-profit organization that works to stop the construction of dams on the Narmada River.
  • Malala Yousafzai: The youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist who works to promote the right of girls to education. She was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012.
