America in Black and White: A Photographer's Journey Through a Divided Nation
In his new book, This Is What America Looks Like, photographer Ken Light captures the beauty and the pain of a country grappling with its racial divide. Through stunning black-and-white images, Light tells the stories of Americans from all walks of life, from the inner cities to the rural heartland. He shows us the faces of hope and despair, of resilience and anger. And he asks us to confront the uncomfortable truths about our nation's past and present.

Light's journey began in the aftermath of the Rodney King beating and the Los Angeles riots of 1992. He was struck by the way that the media portrayed the events, focusing on the violence and looting while ignoring the underlying causes of the unrest. He decided to use his photography to tell a different story, one that would show the human face of racial inequality in America.
Over the next two decades, Light traveled to communities across the country, from Ferguson, Missouri to Charleston, South Carolina. He met with activists, community leaders, and ordinary people who were struggling to make sense of the racial divide. He photographed them in their homes, their churches, and their schools. He listened to their stories and tried to capture their experiences in his images.
The resulting photographs are both beautiful and heartbreaking. They show us the beauty of America's diversity, but they also reveal the deep wounds that divide us. We see images of children playing in segregated neighborhoods, of police officers patrolling black communities with military-grade weapons, and of Confederate flags flying high above state capitols. Light's photographs challenge us to confront the uncomfortable truths about our nation's past and present.
This Is What America Looks Like is a powerful and moving book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the racial divide in America and to work towards a more just and equitable future.
