By Lee Engfer
Publisher: Capstone Press (2020)
Genre: Graphic biography
Age range: 8-12 years old
Summary: Wilma Rudolph was born in a poor sharecropping family in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 1940. At the age of four, she contracted polio, which left her with a paralyzed left leg. Doctors told her she would never walk again, but Wilma refused to give up. With the help of her family and friends, she worked hard to regain her strength and mobility. By the time she was 12 years old, she was able to walk without crutches.
Wilma's determination and perseverance paid off. In 1960, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games. She also set world records in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x100-meter relay. After her retirement from track and field, Wilma became a coach and mentor to young athletes. She also worked to raise awareness of polio and other disabilities.
Wilma Rudolph's story is an inspiration to anyone who has ever faced adversity. It shows that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
